Surplus Studio was born on a rainy day... when my 4y old son was desperately in need of a new rain jacket.

As I have been working in fashion for half of my life, I am very much aware of the impact of the clothing industry. So I am always trying to buy sustainable kidswear as much as possible, but for a raincoat.. that was kinda tricky. See, these functional waterproof fabrics aren't usually produced in a very sustainable way. 

As he loves my own surplus German Flecktarn Gore-Tex raincoat, which I had been wearing for over 10 years already but of which the zip had just been broken, I minimised it for him, with a coloured zipper of his choice. 

And that's where the story begins...

Surplus clothing has always been my passion; I love treasure hunting in a good thrift store or 2nd hand clothing market. It always strikes me how durable, strong and extremely well-made these garment often are. And also, they never go out of fashion.

So ever since that rainy day I've been hunting a lot more, in order to care, repair and upcycle. For friends, family... and you! There is zero pollution in the process of making, assembling or shipping out garments. They make you feel good, and protected. Like a hero!
